New Evolution

After a lot of gameplay testing we have decided to go with three stages of mutation.

First stage is a fresh test subject. These chibi sized humanoids are plain and simple. When they pickup special mutagens they become a full fledged mutant. After eating X number of regular mutagens, they become juggernaut mutants for short period of time. The juggernaut's appearance reflect which special mutagens the player have eaten most of.
We would like the juggernaut's appearance to be a mix off all the mutations you have eaten, and in time we might implement this, but for now, for the proof of concept, this will do.

Level Render

Yeah! First render of the level!

The three corners still need spawn points. I'm gonna use the Mutant Baths for reference on building them.
Hope I will finish the mockup tonight. Next up... unwrap :(

Menu

When the game starts, you control your mutant immediately. Following the signs will either Start the game or take you to the Options page.

At any time the other players can join in. When they do, their mutant will spawn, and will be free to move around. Of course only player one, the owner of the game, can chose Options and Start.

Chibi... the new standard

A comparison between chibi style and creature box style. I think the chibi style wins out.

Mutant Bath

Game play right now features pspots in the lever where you mutate. This is the concept art for these mutant baths.

Yep, I have changed the pterosaurus to a man o war. Why? Man o wars rule! That's why!!!

Powerups

Concept for powerups. These will increase your power and give you mutations.

And here is a version in teal, that colorwise sets it apart from the players.

Alternative Art Style Research

After fiddling around with the colors for few days, trying to come up with a color schema that I can use, it got me thinking.
The classic toony look is good and all, it caters to a wide populace and is easy digestible by everyone. But we are not a huge company, and perhaps going so "mainstream" will only get the game lost in the millions others. Maybe this game needs a more arty farty look. Something to set it apart from the rest, something to make it a "hipster game" visually if you will.

Still working with the color schema from before, this style is hugely inspired by David Oreilly, and as you can see, it is still work in progress. Not sure if this works at all, the target audience, which is children, might not understand the value of the simplicity. They are more familiar with World of Warcraft and Ratchet and Clank style graphics. Take a chance on art?

Eel Man Evolution

More electric eel mutation sketches.

Here you see the mutant go from "vanilla" mutant to all out electric eel mutant. This is green player example.

Here is another example where I have tried to make him a little more fishy.

New Mutant

Electric Eel Mutant!!! Wrarrraugh!

Photoshop electricty effect away!

EDIT: Mole nose need to disappear!

Ingame Art

Ok so, this is the new version of ingame concept art. New perspective which works with our iPhone-controller technology.

This is a rather quick concept, because I just know the technology will change again :D

GUI

...I am not a big fan of GUI design, perhaps my lack of skills is why. Here is work in progress. The idea is for four players to play on the same iPad. What is a more likely play scenario is everybody having their own iPhone where they can play the game from, on the iPad, which renders these concepts a little obsolete. However, thought spent, I will continue with this style when working out the GUI for iPhone/Controller design.

Colorgasm. Too much.

Getting there... still not perfect. But working in the right direction.

Is this creature anthropomorphic at all?

... or is it just a toony pterosaur?

Colors are extremely vibrant when not seen on my laptop. Hmm...
